Rescuers in the central province of Quang Nam have retrieved 12 bodies of 16 people buried in a mudslide on Thursday night, a local official said on Sunday.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing along the Nuoc Vin River in Tra Giac Commune, Bac Tra My District, where the incident took place during downpours triggered by typhoon Mirinae, which lashed the central coast on Monday.

The mudslide, which is estimated to cover over one hectare of land, heavily injured three of the victims, according to Huynh Tan Sam, secretary of Bac Tra My District’s party committee.

As of Sunday night the eleventh storm to hit the East Sea this year had killed 123 people in the central provinces, mainly in Phu Yen and Binh Dinh, the Central Committee of Storm and Flood Control (CCSFC) reported Monday morning.

One was listed missing while 145 have been injured, it said, estimating property damage and loss at over VND5 trillion (US$280 million), doubling the figures reported Friday.

Before making landfall in Vietnam, Mirinae killed two people in neighboring Cambodia and left 27 people dead in the Philippines, where thousands are still living in evacuation centers after a series of deadly storms this typhoon season, AFP reported.
