At least 33 firms in the southern Dong Nai Province have been found polluting the environment with untreated wastewater and exhaust fumes, and are set to be fined, officials said Sunday.

The provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment said they have suggested the local government fines the polluting firms a total of VND525 million (US$29,300).

Included in the list is the Tin Nghia Industrial Zone Development Company which will have to pay VND28.5 million after its wastewater was found to contain 5-10 times more toxins than permitted. The Anco International Nutrition Joint Venture Company faced a VND21 million fine for the same reason.

Meanwhile exhaust fumes released by the Dong Tien Joint Stock Company that produces and exports garment products were found to contain around six times more carbon monoxide (CO) than the permitted level.

The company, based in the province’s capital city of Bien Hoa, faces fines of VND12 million.
