Vietnam Airlines has suspended three flight attendants for allegedly stealing money from a passenger on a Sunday morning flight, the national carrier announced later the same day.

The passenger in question claims he put a handbag with VND200 million (US$11,192) into a luggage compartment on flight VN279 from Hanoi to Dong Hoi in Quang Binh Province, but when the plane landed at Dong Hoi Airport the money was gone, an airline spokesman said.

Following a complaint by the passenger, whose name wasn’t revealed, other flight attendants searched for the money as the plane continued on to Ho Chi Minh City.

Only when it landed at HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat Airport was the cash found under seat 4C, which was not the passenger’s seat, the spokesman said.

The money was returned to the passenger in Dong Hoi as the authorities began investigating the incident, he said.

The passenger told Vietnam Airlines’ representatives that, during his flight to Dong Hoi, the flight attendants had wandered around the cabin the whole time.

In the meantime, three Vietnamese flight attendants arrested at a South Korean airport on Thursday on suspicion of trying to carry 20 taels of undeclared gold to Vietnam have been repatriated.

The carrier is awaiting an official finding by South Korean customs before deciding what action to take against the three employees.
