Hanoi builds pontoon as Thang Long bridge under repair

A floating bridge crossing the Red River opened for traffic on November 23 to reduce overload to the Thang Long bridge, which is being repaired.

Workers were building the road to the pontoon bridge in Dong Ngac commune, Tu Liem district.

Around 300m from the pontoon is the Thang Long bridge, which is under repair.

To go from this bank in Tu Liem to the other bank in Dong Anh district, vehicles will have to pass 600m pontoon bridge to the warp in the middle of the river, and then cross another 1000m pontoon.

The pontoon bridge was built by soldiers of the Corps of Engineers.

Nearly 300 soldiers of brigades 239 and 249 were mobilised to work days and nights to build this pontoon.

The pontoon was tested on November 23. According to major general Duong Duc Hoa, commander of the Corps of Engineers, this is a modern pontoon, with tonnage of 60 tonnes.

The pontoon opens for traffic from 5am to 11pm so during this time, all waterway vehicles are banned.

The pontoon was opened for traffic in the morning of November 24.

According to transportation inspectors, around 250 cars went through the pontoon within the first two hours after it was opened for traffic.

Passengers on some coaches had to leave the cars to walk.

A truck got stuck in mud, causing traffic jam.

A specialised car was used to help stuck vehicles.

Vehicles had to wait for their turns.

Boats and barges have to wait until 11pm to continue their trips in the Red River.
