Ho Chi Minh City authorities have asked the local transport department, taxi associations and related agencies to propose solutions to reorganize the local taxi industry, including restricting the number of cars.

Experts have recently warned about the excessive number of taxis in the city, saying they should be limited to 1,000 cars per one million people.

By this measure, the city would need 8,000 taxis to serve its 8 million populations. However, there are at least 11,758 registered taxis under the management of 35 companies citywide, they said.

The large number of taxis, including many unregistered ones, are plying the streets without proper zoning, and is a significant factor in the traffic jams that occur so often in the city, said Associate Professor Pham Xuan Mai of the HCMC University of Technology.
