A passenger injured in a hydrofoil collision on Wednesday receives treatment at the hospital

Eight people were injured when two hydrofoils collided on the Saigon River Wednesday, said Tran Van Sinh, head of Ho Chi Minh City’s waterway police.

The accident happened when a Greenline hydrofoil carrying 37 passengers from HCMC to the southern coastal town of Vung Tau hit the Petro No. 2, which was carrying 67 in the opposite direction.

An unexpected bend in the river in front of the Vict Harbor, where the accident took place, was a regular danger zone, according to Le Huy Thao, director general of Greenline Joint-stock Company.

Tran Quoc Hieu, vice director of Quang Hung Company, agreed with Thao, saying that although the two boats’ captains reduced their speeds around the turn, it didn’t help much due to heavy rain at the time.

The collision damaged the Greenline’s starboard side and the Petro’s prow.

Five of the injured passengers were released from Saigon Hospital the night of the accident.

No one was heavily injured, local newspaper Tuoi Tre quoted Thao as saying.
