The two Vinasun taxi cabs used by attackers to arrive at the fatal fight in Ho Chi Minh City, early Monday.

A man from the north-central province of Thanh Hoa admitted Sunday morning to stabbing an innocent bystander to death during a roadside brawl the previous night.

Le Van Long, 33, turned himself in to Ho Chi Minh City police for the murder, which he said took place at 1 a.m. Sunday morning in Linh Xuan Ward, Thu Duc District.

Witness Dinh Van Ben from the northern Nghe An Province had initially reported the incident to police immediately after it happened.

He told investigators he was driving Le Van Phi, also from Nghe An, on the back of his motorbike when they were trapped by a huge fight in the middle of the street.

Ben said he and Phi had no idea what was going on.

Investigators said Ben and Phi’s vehicle was stopped by a seven-seat Vinasun taxi. A man from another car parked nearby then ran towards the taxi with a machete.

Ben and Phi ran but more people from another Vinasun taxi and three motorbikes joined the fight with knives and canes. Phi was caught in the fracas and stabbed dozens of times, according to a forensic test.

The two seven-seat Vinasun taxi cabs were left behind along with the weapons.

Police are investigating the case.
