Hanoi police are investigating a case where a staff member of the transport police department caused a string of accidents injuring four people on Friday, a local official said on Saturday.

According to witnesses, Pham The Dung, who was later identified as an employee of the Hanoi Department of Road and Railway Transport Police (C26), drove a Hyundai car at high speed on Ton Duc Thang Street disregarding traffic lights.

He crashed into a motorbike carrying two people, causing one lose to consciousness and injuring the other’s leg.

Dung went on to hit two other motorbikes injuring both drivers before crashing into a street divider, witnesses said.

Many people gave chase, but Duong only stopped the car around five kilometers away from the first accident spot because of a flat tire, witnesses said.

Local police then pulled Dung, who was reportedly dead drunk, out of the car and took him to the police station.

Dong Da District’s police are handling the case, said Do Dinh Nghi, head of C26, stressing that Dung would be punished in accordance with laws.

However, Nghi said the accidents were not very critical and said Dung had attempted to get away because he had become hysterical.

Nguyen Van Thanh, deputy head of Dong Da District police, meanwhile, said Dung had violated transport regulations even though the injuries caused were not very serious.

If the injured persons’ families don’t pursue the case further, Dung will be fined for his violations, Thanh said.

Nghi said Dung, who works at C26’s computer division, said he had reported the matter to his seniors and had called on the people he had injured.
