Water released by a broken pipeline punctured two holes in a busy Ho Chi Minh City road Monday morning.

The major pipeline broke at around 3am underneath Road 25B, the only route connecting Cat Lai Port, one of the south’s largest sea terminals, with central Ho Chi Minh City, local newswire VnExpress said.

Hundreds of families were cut off from their water supply, according to VnExpress.

Due to the immense pressure, the running water ended breaking two holes in Road 25B and erupting at around 5 a.m., said the news service.

The holes were 1.5×1.5 meters and 1.5×1.7 meters around and about two meters deep. Three meters apart, both holes led to a 30 square-meter cave the rushing water from the pipes had formed underground, according to the report.

Authorities fenced off the holes before any accidents occurred.

The water flow was cut off several hours after the holes appeared.

Initial investigations showed that the joint connecting a 400-millimeter pipe and a 600-millimeter pipe had broken and caused the accident.

The pipes are owned by HCMC Clean Water Transport Company, which operates under the state-run Saigon Water Corp.

The pipers supply water to hundreds of families in District 2, factories and ships at Cat Lai Port, the Vietnamnet said.

The company said it recently asked the company building the Phu My Bridge, near Road 25B, to raise the pipeline as the bridge work would interfere with it otherwise.

Mac Dang Nop, deputy general director the Phu My Bridge Construction Company, said his firm would pump all water out of the holes and repair the road.

Nop said it will take at least four days to fix the road, but he also said the company would try to reconnect the water supply before that.

25B is the only route connecting Cat Lai Port to other destinations in HCMC. The road receives thousands of containers and trucks every day.
