A resident in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 7 buys clean water to carry home on a tricycle.

Ho Chi Minh City’s major water supplier should increase its retail price by 10 percent each year till 2013 instead of by 35-89 percent at one go as it has proposed, officials said at a municipal meeting on Wednesday.

The price of household water in the city now is VND2,700 per cubic meter while water for production costs VND4,500.

Many participants at the meeting suggested that the Saigon Water Corporation sets water consumption threshold at 16 cubic meters per family per month.

However, for poor and large families the water usage limits that take the number of families’ members into account.

Chaired by HCMC People’s Committee’s vice chairman Nguyen Thanh Tai and attended by representatives from the city People’s Council, the Fatherland Front Committee (FFC) and other related agencies, the meeting was held following an FCCs conference on Monday where experts expressed strong dissatisfaction with the company’s proposed price hike.
