The Transport Ministry on Sunday morning launched the construction of a 40-kilometer channel for big cargo ships to ply the Mekong Delta’s Hau River.

According to the ministry, once the channel that can accommodate 10,000 to 20,000 DWT ships is put into operation by the end of 2011, it would give the delta’s companies great advantages in transporting goods.

It is estimated that 70-80 percent of local goods currently have to be transported to or from Ho Chi Minh City’s ports, which costs companies US$7-10 per ton in transportation fees.

The new channel would help the delta transport some 22 million tons of goods every year, said Pham Anh Tuan, project director of the Postcoast Company, the design consultant.

With a total investment of over VND5 trillion ($279.7 million) sourced from government bonds, the project, covering 1,500 hectares, also includes a ship shelter and a 36-kilometer dyke.
