Five Chinese people will go to trial in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Tuesday for illegally trafficking nearly eight tons of hashish last year.

In May, 2008, Ministry of Public Security inspectors and Quang Ninh police seized two containers filled with 7.9 tons of hashish, worth around US$80 million, at the local Mong Cai border gate.

Inspectors who said the investigation began last June told the media the drugs had been imported from Pakistan to Chua Ve Port in Hai Phong City.

The shipment was about to be sent to Asia and the Americas by Lu Ming Cheng, Chan Kwok Kwong, Wang Hui Lan, Ngan Chiu Kuen, and Leong Chi Kai, police said. All the suspects were arrested very soon after discovery of the contraband.

Lu, Chan and Leong will also be prosecuted for illegally transporting currencies across border as part of the same trial.

Nearly $180,000 in cash, including one million Hong Kong dollars and some 270,000 Yuan, were found together with the containers, according to investigators.
