The Ho Chi Minh City government on Wednesday approved a plan to revoke 33 public freight yards covering 5.8 hectares for social welfare projects.

City councilors early this year found that the freight yards, all in District 8, had been left idle for many years.

According to a proposal submitted by the district administration earlier, the freight yards will be used to build six schools, more than 34,000 houses for people relocated by state projects or those displaced because the canals in front of their homes are to be enlarged.

One freight yard or 0.15 hectare plot at 503 Ben Binh Dong Street will be auctioned to raise funds for the relocation.

There are 159 freight yards of 45.2 hectares in District 8 and 40 of 7 hectares have been rented out at VND25,000 a square meter a month, the councilors found.
