LookAtVietnam – The Hanoi People’s Council have approved the flood prevention scheme which means around 21,000 families along the city’s rivers will be moved.

Consolidating the dike in Chuong My during the historical flood in 2008.

Between now and 2020, the city will need 99.7 trillion dong for the scheme which has two phases.

The funding will come from the state budget, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank (WB). The cost of moving 21,000 families is estimated at 71 trillion dong alone.

The project covers 29 district, within eight zones.

Vice chairman Trinh Duy Hung said the plan will define the water volume and water levels of each river and suggest solutions to fight flooding.

Hanoi currently has 18 dikes totaling nearly 465km, one third belonging to the Red River.
