Transportation companies in Ho Chi Minh City will file a suit against the leaders of a local firm if it does not stop its wrongful toll collection, a lawyer for the companies said Saturday.

The HCMC Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Company (CII) should also make a plan to return fees that it has wrongly collected from the companies, said lawyer Tran Vu Hai, who represents the HCMC Goods Transportation Association.

Hai said the toll collection on Hanoi Highway, as approved by the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Finance, was aimed to recover the construction costs of Dien Bien Phu Street, targeting vehicles traveling through the street from downtown areas to the highway.

However, over the past eight years, many vehicles have passed the toll booths without using the street, according to the association.

CII recently moved the station to another location on the highway to collect fees from even more vehicles using Road 25B to Cat Lai Port in District 2, the association said.

In response to the companies’ complaints, CII in November announced that they would stop charging vehicles using Road 25B by setting up other booths on Nguyen Thi Dinh Street, which intersects with the road, to return the fees they paid at the booth on Hanoi Highway.

The association did not agree with the solution, saying it was time consuming and cost drivers more as they had to move between the booths for collecting the refund.
