Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has stopped consideration of a former pilot’s proposal for a shorter flight route between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Early this month, in its second report about the infeasibility of former airline and military pilot Mai Trong Tuan’s plan, the Ministry of Transport had proposed that the PM stops giving the plan any more consideration.

According to the report, the proposed route would affect current air routes because it would cross the borders of Laos and Cambodia at several points, connecting it with more flight service stations and crossing other air routes.

The transmitting time between different flight service stations could be as short as two to three minutes, posing potential threats to flight safety, it said.

Concerned airlines would also face difficulties in obtaining flight permission in emergency cases because they would have to ask for permission from aviation authorities of three countries, the report had argued.

The ministry also said there would be no economic benefit from the proposed route because each flight would cost the airline between US$320-454 extra to use neighboring countries’ airspace, so each flight would cost an extra $800 at least.

The route would be shorter than the current one by just 40-60 kilometers, not 200 kilometers as claimed by Tuan, the ministry said.
