The Ho Chi Minh City customs department on Thursday said 360 white stones confiscated from a Vietnamese man at a local airport on January 17 have been identified as diamonds costing over VND7.1 billion (US$384,615).

Luu Chi Hung, 40, was also found carrying a sheet of diamond and golden jewelry comprising ten bracelets, two necklaces and one pair of earrings, when he arrived on United Airlines’ flight UA869 from Hong Kong, according to the customs department at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

He put the undeclared diamonds and jewelry costing nearly VND7.4 billion in total in small plastic bags and a tobacco pack hidden the waist band of his trousers.

The case is being investigated further.

Over the past two days, customs officials at Tan Son Nhat Airport have found two cases of people trying to take more foreign currency out of the country than allowed.

A couple, Pham Vinh Ngoc and Pham Thi Thu Trang, were found carrying an undeclared sum of US$30,000 when boarding a flight to Macau, local newswire Tien Phong Online reported.

In another case, Nguyen Kim Thoa was caught with 14,800 euros ($20,651) that she had not declared while preparing to take a flight to China’s Shanghai City, according to the news source.

Regulations require passengers to declare sums of more than US$7,000 or VND15 million in cash that are being brought in or taken out of the country.
