Thirty-eight universities and colleges will have their admission quotas cut for the next school year and have to pay fines for violations committed during this year’s enrollment, the education ministry said Friday.

An inspection conducted last November by the Ministry of Education and Training showed most schools admitted more students than allowed for the 2009-2010 school year.

Phan Thiet University in the central province of Binh Thuan exceeded its admission quota by as much as 91.73 percent, while Can Tho College in the Mekong Delta admitted 88.64 percent

It was 88.64 percent at Can Tho College in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, and 63 percent at Hanoi College of Electronic and Electro-Refrigeratory Technics.

On the other hand, many schools didn’t enroll enough students, like Ha Hoa Tien University in the northern province of Ha Nam that admitted 145 students against its quota of 500.

The ministry should take schools’ enrollment capacity into consideration as well as their infrastructure and human resources into consideration when assigning quotas to them, they inspectors suggested.

Vietnam at present has 376 universities and colleges.
