Ho Chi Minh City customs on Tuesday said they had confiscated 306 white stones suspected to be diamonds from a Vietnamese man at a local airport.

The undeclared stones were found in small plastic bags hidden in the waist band of Luu Chi Hung’s trousers waist when he was going through the customs at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Hung had arrived on a flight from Hong Kong. Customs department officials said they had sent the stones for testing.

Meanwhile, HCMC’s market management agency on Tuesday confiscated 141 kilograms of Chinese jewelry of unclear origins without necessary documents at the Hoa Binh Market and An Dong Trade Center.

The agency took samples of the jewelry for tests.

The market raid follows findings in the US that children’s jewelry made-in-China was laced with cadmium – a highly toxic chemical considered carcinogenic and harmful to the kidney and bones.

Cadmium is a white metallic element used in alloys, electroplating, nuclear reactors, dental amalgams, pigments and electronics items.
