A court in the northern province of Lai Chau sentenced six people to death and four to life in prison for drug trafficking on Tuesday.

According to the indictment, Ho A Cua, Giang A Tenh, Sung A Thai, and Ho A Co were arrested in September last year while smuggling 4.2 kilograms of heroin into the adjacent province of Lao Cai through the Pha Long border gate.

Prosecutors said subsequent investigations then led police to apprehend another six suspects: Ho A Vang, Mua Va Thanh, Ly Seo Sua, Vang A Dua, Hang Seo Trang, Thao Lao Trang.

Cua, Tenh, Thai, Vang, Thanh, and Sua were sentenced to death while the others received life sentences.

The indictment said that the defendants were also involved in several other drug trafficking cases. Some of the convicts are related.

Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Trafficking more than 600 grams of heroin is punishable by death.
