At least 36 Chinese boats were found illegally fishing in Vietnamese waters off the central coast during the last week of last year, local newswire Vietnamnet reported on Monday.

Some of the boats were fishing just 35 sea miles off the city of Da Nang, the news source said.

Dinh Tien Dung, a representative of Da Nang Coast Guard, told Vietnamnet Chinese fishing boats were found operating in Vietnam almost every day, sometimes tens of boats in one day.

The report said similar numbers of Chinese boats were found in Vietnam throughout the three-day New Year holiday.

The Da Nang Coast Guard found nearly 20 Chinese fishing boats in Vietnamese waters on Sunday morning, Tuoi Tre reported on Monday.

Duong De Dung, head of the coast guards headquarters of Da Nang, said most Chinese boats simply asked to stop fishing and leave Vietnamese waters.

The coast guards would only take into custody boats that continued fishing after they were caught, Dung said, noting that Vietnam had yet to employ the action.

At the moment Da Nang authorities were cooperating with local fishermen to detect Chinese fishing boats, Vietnamnet reported.
