Hanoi has been crippled by traffic jams because its streets can’t handle the number of vehicles in the city, local police have said.

A recent report by the capital’s police department said traffic would only be able to flow properly when only 2 percent of current traffic is traveling the streets.

Statistics in the report showed that at any given moment one kilometer of street in Hanoi had to be carrying an average of 48.5 cars and 548.5 motorbikes. The amount in the downtown is more than 107 cars and 646.5 motorbikes.

Hanoi streets stretch over 5,968 kilometers while the city now manages nearly 302,300 cars and 3.65 million motorbikes, including 38,000 cars and more than 271,800 motorbikes registered in 2009 alone, city police said.

The number does not include vehicles from central government agencies and military units operating in Hanoi.

The police also said 160 markets, 120 colleges and 2,200 lower-level schools, including kindergartens, had worsened traffic in the city.
