Forest wardens in the central-coast province of Khanh Hoa seized around 14 cubic meters of illegally logged timber in incidents Monday.

Wardens and traffic police first seized more than 1.7 cubic meters of cho chi (Parashorea stellata) timber, in a traffic stop that morning.

The car driver, whose name was not yet made available at the time, said he had been hired to drive the timber, already cut into logs, from the Central Highlands provinc of Dak Lak to Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa’s premier beach resort town.

Wardens and local agencies then uncovered more than 12.2 cubic meters of logs in a local residence’s garden in Cam Lam District that afternoon. The homeowner was identified only as N.V.T.

Around half of the logs were gu mat (Sindora siamensis) and the rest gioi timber, both only found in the Southeast Asia and very valuable in Vietnam.

Police have seized all logs found in the two cases and are investigating further.
