Tien Giang police said Wednesday they will propose charges against a resort owner for forcing singers to take off all their clothes to see if they were hiding tips.

“I begged her not to insist on removing my underwear but Ms. Gam forced us to do it in front of many people,” a don ca tai tu (amateur southern Vietnamese opera) singer was quoted by local newswire Vnexpress as saying in her complaint against Ho Thi Hong Gam, owner of the Thoi Son 4A Resort in the Mekong Delta province’s My Tho Town.

On December 19, 2009, three female singers who didn’t want to be named were summoned by Gam and Nguyen Phuc Chan, a manager at the resort, to a room after a performance at the resort. Then they were asked if they hid the money customers gave them personally.

The three took all the money from their pockets to show Gam and Chan, but the two insisted that they remove all their clothes.

“We removed our clothes, but Gam was not satisfied as we were still wearing our underwear. Although we protested, Gam didn’t listen,” the singer said.

There were five other adults and a 5-year-old boy in the room at the time, she said.

Police are also investigating allegations that a person who claimed to be police officer from Ho Chi Minh City threatened the singer and asked her to withdraw her complaint.
