Reusable bags were given free to customers at certain shops and supermarkets in Hanoi Saturday as part of a campaign against plastic bags.

The program, launched by Hanoi Environment Protection Fund and the state-owned Hanoi Trade Corporation (Hapro), will use images in public places to make people more aware of the harm that plastic bags have been doing to the environment, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Customers at Hapro shops and supermarkets who will receive free reusable bags are the first targets of the program.

The Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment estimates that households in the city discharge 2,000 tons of garbage a day, a large amount of which come from plastic bags.

By 2015, households in the capital city will be generating 850,000 tons of garbage a day, according to the department.
