Five people, including a child, were critically injured when a concrete mixer truck collided with as many as nine vehicles in Vietnam’s southern hub Ho Chi Minh City on Monday afternoon.

The accident happened at around 5.30 p.m. when the truck seemed to lose control as it ran on Kha Van Can Street in Thu Duc District, according to witnesses.

At a traffic circle it crashed into a car and a motorbike, injuring one person, before striking another car, causing the latter to run into Thu Duc Post Office’s gate, one of the witnesses, Nguyen Van Thanh, told the newswire.

It then ran over another two motorbikes which were carrying three people and a five-year-old child, according to Thanh.

The truck only stopped after smashing into another car and another truck, and heavily destroying a modified vehicle and a bicycle, he added.

As the accident took place during rush hour, it caused a major traffic jam around the Thu Duc Market.

Locals nabbed the driver as he tried to escape from the site. The truck belonged to the Uni Eastern Vietnam Company.

In a separate accident, two people died on the spot and at least 19 were rushed to hospital after a head on collision between a truck and a bus in the central province of Ninh Thuan on Monday night.

Local police said the crash on the National Way No. 1A in Phuoc Nam Commune was so hard that it took a crane quite a while to separate the two vehicles.

The police also spent two hours clearing up the traffic jam that happened following the accident. The accident is being investigated, police said.
