The surface concrete layer, which reached a temperature that was less than 120 degree Celsius, was not hot enough to effectively bond with other materials . . .

The institute reached this conclusion after the Ministry of Transport asked them to investigate the cause of the 10 new cracks on the surface of the bridge, which average one metre in length and are 4cm to 7cm wide.

Doan Minh Tam, head of the institute, said that the bridge had been re-paved last December when the temperature fell below 15 degree Celsius. This resulted in the plastic concrete layer to not properly work. The material was then unable to stick to the other construction material.

Bui Xuan Trung, general director of the Bao Quan Construction and Investment Company, said that the company would repair the bridge, which was stated in their contract that they had signed with investors.

Tam said that fixing the cracks on the city’s Thang Long Bridge would be implemented this week.

The workers will also investigate other areas of the bridge in order to make sure that they are not susceptible to damage or producing cracks.

The advanced technology, used to build the road during the repairs process, costs VND50 billion (US$2.6 million) and all the materials were imported from England.
