The Hanoi Power Company joined with Hanoi-area banks to begin checking ATMs throughout Hanoi on April 5 and detected nearly ten machines with electricity leaks.

An electrician checked an ATM in Hanoi.

Electricity leaks were recorded from 3V to 70.5V. Electricians said that ATM users will feel numb in their fingers if they touch ATMs with power leaks under 10V and it will be dangerous for them if the voltage is higher.

According to technical rules of the power sector, equipment with electricity leaks over 5V must be connected to the ground, but some banks ignored this rule when installing their ATMs.

The Hanoi Power Company will complete its inspections and send lists of unsafe ATMs to banks this week for repair.

hile waiting for the lists, banks are examining their ATMs too. The Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) Deputy General Director Le Thu Ha confirmed that all Vietcombank ATMs are installed correctly and checked daily to ensure customer safety.

A VIB Bank representative asserted that their ATMs are checked every three months during regular maintenance, but they are double-checking them this week.

The Technical and Commercial Bank of Vietnam (Techcombank) announced it would examine all 700 ATMs in Vietnam and would announce results on April 7.

In HCM City, after the Power Company discovered 121 unsafe ATMs, banks have scrambled to repair them and install ground connecting equipment at ATMs.

Previously, many people complained that they received gentle electric shocks at ATMs, especially during wet days. Since a 12-year-old girl was electrocuted to death at an ATM in HCM City, banks have hurried to check all of their ATMs.
