British and Singaporean engineers marveled at the unusual cracks along Hanoi’s Thang Long bridge, which they claim are abnormal.

Nguyen Nang The, deputy general director of the MoT’s project management unit No.2 and representative of the investor, admitted that the cracks on Thang Long Bridge, discovered in early March 2010, were filled, but have now opened again and widened. The said MoT asked investors to complete repairs before March 31, but this task has been suspended due to inclement weather.

“The repairs must be conducted in sunny weather, so this job may be finished this week,” The surmised. Forecasts for Hanoi call for rain until Thursday (April 8).

The investor must dig up the asphalt on 200 square meters to put down a new layer.

Engineers from Britain and Singapore inspected the cracks and commented that this is an abnormal phenomenon. They have collected some samples to test, but have yet to release an official conclusion.

The bridge, which connects Hanoi to Noi Bai International Airport, was repaired previously, but just three months later, many cracks appeared again on its surface. The Institute for Transportation Science and Technology cited bad weather and low quality asphalt. The cracks were filled in again, but they split once more along with the appearance of new cracks.
