The General Department of Police in early April asked Ninh Thuan police forces to prepare to hunt a group of transnational drug traffickers from Laos to Vietnam.
At 9pm on April 8, Ninh Thuan police discovered the suspected car with Lao plates on National Highway 1A with two men in the car.
Police signaled the car to stop, but the driver only sped up. Police chased the car into Ninh Thuan province until it was cornered in a blind alley. The two men jumped from the car and ran into a near-by maize field.
A hundred police officers, assisted by police dogs, were mobilized to find the fugitives. At 1.15am, the police dogs detected a man hiding in a field. Police called for him to surrender, but the man began shooting, injuring two police officers.
The police were ordered to shoot the criminal. The other fugitive escaped. Police discovered up to 6 kilos of heroin in their car.
The identity of the two criminals was discovered because they ran away from a hotel and left their passports.
According to the documents, they are Lao citizens: Douangchanh Vong Oudom, 31, from Luang Prabang and Vichitvongsa Khamseng, 52, from Houaphanh. They entered Vietnam on April 7 by car, via the Nam Can border gate in Nghe An.
Based on their passports, police have identified the dead suspect as Oudom. His body is now at Ninh Thuan General Hospital. A wanted notice has been issued for Vongsa. This case has also been reported to Interpol.
