The director of Hanoi Department of Construction said that the capital is a developing city, so super-small and crooked houses are a matter of course.

An odd house in Hanoi, which is only 5sq.m, with the front and back balconies.

Speaking before the Hanoi People’s Council in a meeting on April 6, Do Xuan Anh explained that many houses and pieces of land in residential areas are not standard in shape, so when new roads are built, crossing residential areas, the super-thin and crooked houses are created.

“This is the character of a developing urban area. Hanoi had houses with depths of only one meter in the city’s downtown during the French colonial period,” Xuan Anh noted.

He added that Hanoi needs comprehensive solutions and time to solve this problem. The ideal measure is that, when a site clearance is carried out, the city will reclaim and compensate owners for the pieces of land. At present, the city only claims enough land to build roads, so some families have small sections of land remaining. They then construct houses on the land, creating super-thin and crooked structures.

Such a solution, however, would be heavy burden to Hanoi’s budget.

These odd houses are popping up along new roads like Khuat Duy Tien, O Cho Dua and the foot of Vinh Tuy bridge. Since these houses are very small, all of them have balconies stretching out by dozens of meters, which is very dangerous for surrounding families.

Many deputies sharply criticized Hanoi’s construction management and the existence of these super-small houses. Vice-Chair of the Hanoi People’s Council, Le Quang Nhue, remarked that, in the entire world, only In Vietnam does this kind of house exists.

A city representative reported that Hanoi has requested districts to deal with this issue and that district chairs must answer to the city government if the super-thin houses reappear.

Hanoi plans to mobilize capital to revoke all small pieces of land along the new roads. The city will issue regulations on architectural planning for construction works along urban streets.
