“The PM has told us to inspect the HCM City-Trung Luong highway project. If corruption is revealed, we would ask the government to impose stern penalities,” said the government’s chief inspector.

VietNamNet Bridge – “The Prime Minister has told us to inspect the HCM City-Trung Luong highway project. If corruption is revealed, we would ask the government to impose stern penalities,” said the government’s chief inspector Tran Van Truyen on May 27.

Truyen said the Government Inspectorate had set up an inspection team to examine the integrity of the highway. Inspectors will release their results in September.

“Inspectors will make clear whether this project was implemented legally and in a legal process or not. The government will consider the project’s impacts to economic and social development based on our inspection,” the chief inspector added.

The official confirmed that any violation, like cutting corners at the expense of safety, would be punished strictly.

This highway for cars, the first of its type in Vietnam, was opened for traffic on February 3. However, drivers have complained that the road dips lower at some places. The Transportation Ministry said that there are four sunken places on this 39.8km highway but they were at an acceptable level.

The HCM City-Trung Luong highway connects HCM City to Long An and Tien Giang provinces, with four entrances for cars at Dem market, Ben Luc, Tan An and Than Cuu Nghia. The total investment for this road is nearly 10 trillion dong or US$555.6 million.
