The board anticipated that by 2015, the number of workers will rise by 600,000, including 480,000 people who will need accommodations. By 2020, the number will increase by 800,000 workers, with 650,000 who need houses.
Hanoi Vice-Chair Phi Thai Binh asked agencies to develop incentives for employers to build worker housing.
According to the Management Board of Hanoi’s Industrial Zones, the city has nearly 20 industrial and hi-tech zones and eight of them are operational, attracting 300,000 workers. Yet, only Bac Thang Long Industrial Zone is near completion of 20 apartment blocks for workers on 20 hectares.
Lack of worker accommodations is among the major reasons that prevent industrial zones from attracting employees.
