A delegation of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese has collected complete information on the life of the overseas Vietnamese community and the Vietnamese language learning situation in Cambodia after a fact-finding tour of the country that concluded on May 16. The six-day tour aims to put forward suitable proposals for the implementation of a pilot project to promote Vietnamese language learning in the overseas Vietnamese communities. While in Cambodia, the delegation, led by Vu Binh, deputy head of the committee’s Culture and Information Department, held working sessions with representatives from the Vietnamese embassy, leaders of six schools and establishments teaching Vietnamese in Phnom Penh and the southern province of Kandal as well as the Director of the Phnom Penh Education, Young People and Tourism Service. They also organised four training workshops on new Vietnamese language teaching methodology and community work for nearly 50 Vietnamese language teachers and members of the Overseas Vietnamese Association in Cambodia. Pham Van Thong, Vice President of the Vietnam Education Psychology and Science Association affirmed that the results of short-term training have not only encouraged Vietnamese expatriates in Cambodia but also brought them new knowledge on the value of the Vietnamese language teaching and learning. Apart from Cambodia, the pilot project will be carried out in Laos, Russia, the Czech Republic, the US and Canada. Sheen Hok Charitable Foundation VN debuts The Sheen Hok International Charitable Foundation was made its debut in Hanoi on May 15 and announced its charitable projects in Vietnam. Energy saving writing contest launched Radio the Voice of Vietnam and the Ministry of Industry and Trade has jointly launched a writing contest on energy saving. Contestants should write about individuals or organisations, which have used energy in safe and effective ways or have had practical initiatives on saving energy, or those who have wasted energy and caused a negative effect on sustainable economic and environmental development. They can also propose managerial and technical solutions to save energy in production and consumption and new ways to develop public transport. Writing works should be in form of articles (prior publications acceptable) written from January 1-Ocotber 31, 2010. Winners of the special prize will receive VND15 million, a first prize of VND10 million, a second prize VND5 million and a third prize of VND3 million long with a consolation prize of VND1 million. Works should be sent to the editorial department of Radio the Voice of Vietnam, 58 Quan Su Street, Hanoi. Nguyen Thanh Hung, deputy chairman of Binh Son District’s Binh Chau Commune People’s Committee said that Dang Tam, the owner of the fishing vessel, and 11 crew members had arrived on their boat at Sa Ky Port on Saturday but food, petrol and the fish catch on the vessel remained impounded by China. Thousands to receive free health care Sixty-seven American military staff provided free health care and helped upgrade health clinics in Can Tho City’s Phong Dien and Thoi Lai districts as part of an eight-day Operation Pacific Angel programme. They provided basic medical care as well as dental and optometry services. Total capital of the programme is US$1.2 million. This is the second time the programme has been carried out in Viet Nam. The first was in the central province of Quang Tri in September last year. Free vaccines for northern provinces Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to provide free vaccines against swine fever and decontaminants to the four northern provinces hit by the blue-ear pig epidemic. The provinces concerned are Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh and Ha Nam. According to the ministry’s Animal Health Department, more than 50,000 pigs in 15 northern and central provinces have contracted the disease. The latest outbreak was discovered in the northern province of Hoa Binh last Thursday. Concrete lane dividers to be replaced The Ha Noi People’s Committee has asked the city’s Department of Transport to replace concrete traffic barriers with safer softer ones to ensure traffic safety and improve the urban landscape. It also asked the department and other relevant agencies to speed up the implementation of the project so that they could meet the deadline for the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Ha Noi.
