On a day that temperatures rose to 38°C, the strange smoke suddenly invaded both inner city and suburban areas of Hanoi. It was thickest about 8 pm and could be seen drifting through the streets. People in some high-rise buildings thought there was a fire but it turned out to be smoke only. Many people complained that their eyes stung.

This phenomenon happened last summer in Hanoi, too, worrying many people. The reason then, and probably the reason now, was farmers burning straw from their fields on the outskirts of the city.
