Since early January 2010, over ten swimmers have been bitten by a fish near Quy Nhon. Scientists from Nha Trang Oceanography Institute identified the culprit as a shark, but couldn’t specify the exact species. The Government promised a reward of 10 million dong to anyone who could catch the fish. At least two sharks have been caught, including one weighing over a ton. Yet afterwards, the attacks continued and three people were bitten. The latest case was reported on June 15.

Binh Dinh province’s Vice-Chair Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh stated that it is urgent to protect the people from sharks. The province has asked the Ministry of Science and Technology to conduct systematic research to find out why sharks attack swimmers and also identify measures to avoid such attacks.

Binh noted that the research is not only important for her province, but also for all coastal provinces in Vietnam.
