Up to 78.8 percent of 33 operating and recovery rooms at 13 big hospitals in HCM City failed to meet standards on microorganism content in the air, according to a recent survey by the Institute for Public Health and Hygiene.

As unhygienic as a hospital!

The survey is based on standards for operating rooms from Merck 2009.

Of 33 air samples collected in 2009-2010, 26 samples had the microorganism contents around six times higher than standards allow. Two samples from an operating and a recovery room of two hospitals were positive for bacterium that causes septicemia.

The remaining samples exceeded the World Health Organisation’s standards on aerobic bacterium, fungus and pseudomonas aeruginosa.

HCM City Anti-Bacterial Contamination Association Chair Dr. Le Thi Anh Thu admitted that bacterial contamination is high in first aid and surgical wards. Operating rooms that are not well sterilized are also a problem.
