The accident occurred in Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province.

The train, coded TN2, was running from HCM City to Hanoi when it hit the buffalo. The front wheels of the locomotive derailed and the train slipped nearly 200m. The engine and some ties were broken, but there were no reported human injuries.

Police and authorities came immediately to the site and more than 100 people performed rescue work.

The train has 13 carriages, including 10 passenger carriages with around 600 passengers.

The North-South train continued on again after two hours.
