The Prime Minister approved the construction of these gates in 2008, according to Thao, and Hanoi recently collected opinions from scientists, experts, architects and the public. Most opposed the idea as unnecessary and a waste of money. They suggested that the 50 billion dong be used to assist the poor.
In addition, many claimed the gate designs were not good; both the Vietnam and Hanoi Architects’ Associations withheld their approval.
At the ongoing meeting of Hanoi People’s Council, some delegates on July 14 asked the city to end plans to build the gates.
