The fish has grey skin, a milky stomach and a flat head. Its carcass had begun to decompose because of hot weather. Curiously, the shark had no teeth. At
The shark was too heavy to move or take to shore, so some people cut off its fins to sell.
The area aquatic resource protection agency sent its scientists to study the fish. They reported the fish is nearly 5.5 meters long, with a nearly 4 meter stomach circumference and weighs around 1.5 tons.
“The fish has five open pairs of gills, so we can confirm that it is a shark,” stated one scientist.
Senior fishermen guessed that the fish was injured, so it floated to the cliff when the tide came in and became wedged in the cliff’s side when the tide went back out.
Sharks have appeared in the sea off Quy Nhon since early 2010. A dozens of swimmers have been attacked in this region and resident fishermen have also caught three sharks ranging from several hundred kilos to over one ton near the area.
The Nha Trang Oceanography Institute explained that perhaps Binh Dinh’s port system and aquatic breeding area are located near the shore and residential areas, so sharks are attracted to the zone. Climate change may also be a reason.
Binh Dinh recently asked the Ministry of Science and Technology to assist in researching why sharks are hunting near the shore and attacking people.
