“I wrote these symphonies from October 2008 through December 2009. I’m 76 and I can say that these are my last symphonies,” commented composer Vinh Cat.

“I began writing symphonies in 1959-1960 and I’m among the first Vietnamese composers who wrote symphonies in Vietnam. These are my first about Hanoi,” he added.

The first symphony is a concerto for violin and orchestra entitled “This is Red River – Cai River”, with three chapters.

The second work is named “Not Only Legend” with five chapters, featuring Hanoi’s 1000-year history.

“I’ve added the sounds of folk festivals, gongs, ca tru, praying as well as melodies of Vietnamese souls to this symphony,” the senior composer explained.

The two symphonies total more than 500 pages.

Composer Vinh Cat was former director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Information.
