Two Black-shanked Doucs were killed in Khanh Hoa in 2009.

They are Nguyen Dinh Phan, 38, Luong Van Chanh, 33, and Ho Xuan Thanh, 38, all from Khanh Hoa province.

Police arrested these men at the edge of a forest in Van Ninh district at 9pm, July 6, while they were carrying seven monkeys that had been shot dead. The police also seized two home-made guns and nine bullets.

The three men confessed that they shot the seven monkeys in Van Ninh forest.

Khanh Hoa police preserved the monkeys and sent them to the Institute for Tropical Biology in HCM City for species verification.

Khanh Hoa is home to many rare monkeys, mainly the Black-shanked Douc (Pygathrix nigripes), an endangered species.

From 2007 to 2009, 12 Black-shanked Douc (Pygathrix nigripes) were killed in the province by hunters. In June 2009, three men were sentenced for 10 years in jail for killing five Black-shanked Douc (Pygathrix nigripes) in Hon Ba nature reserve in Khanh Hoa.
