Hanoi’s Hang Ma street, which specializes in votive paper products for the dead, has never sold such a huge number of luxury cars and motorbikes for Vu Lan holiday, a Buddhist holiday for mothers and dead people.

With the thought, “The underworld is similar to the life on earth,” many people bought modern things for the dead. A SH motorbike like this is priced around 150,000 dong ($8).

Paying 200,000 dong ($10), people could buy a Rolls-Royce Phantom or a Mercedes. If they pay more, they could order cars of any real model.

Paper houses are also diverse, with 2-3 story houses and villas.

Prices ranged from 100,000 to 200,000 dong/house. Each house has a land-use right certificate, which many real houses don’t have.

Other modern things like electric fans and air conditioners are also available.

Many people bough high-rise buildings, cars, and air conditioners for their dead relatives.

Votive paper sellers said customers paid on average several hundreds thousand dong to buy votive paper products this Vu Lan holiday. Some paid millions of dong for these things.

According to trends, bicycles were unmarketable this year.
