VietNamNet Bridge – Doctors aboard the USS John S. McCain on August 11-12 worked with area health care providers to offer free check-ups and medicines to around 1000 people in Da Nang. Fifteen American physicians divided into two groups to provide general examinations and specialized dental and eye check-ups.

On August 11, they saw 500 patients. Around 500 more will be examined today. Doctors will supply free medicine worth 300 million dong, sponsored by the U.S. Navy.

Apart from these donations, American naval personnel will also present student bags, toothpaste, toothbrushes and toys to patients and children.

“Doctors from the USS John S. McCain are very experienced. We can learn specialized skills and English from them,” remarked Dr. Nguyen Van Cuc, vice director of Son Tra district health centre.

Major Doctor Vincent Do, a Vietnamese-American, commented: “I studied medicine to help poor people. This time I’m very happy to return to Vietnam to help many people.”
