According to Singaporean police, a Vietnamese student in Singapore committed suicide in her wardrobe after her married boyfriend broke his promise to send tuition fees.

The body of Nguyen Cao Minh Ngoc, 24, was found sitting upright in the cupboard of her hostel room at the Management Development Institute of Singapore on December 15 2009. Singaporean police said she died 24-36 hours before her body was discovered.

Singaporean police initially doubted that Ngoc was killed but according to the Strait Times, detectives recently concluded that Ngoc hung herself.

Ngoc had enrolled for a Master of Science in Management course at the Management Development Institute of Singapore late last year. Her boyfriend, Nguyen Dang Ann, 36, a married engineer, was her sponsor. She had lied to her family, stating that she was studying in Singapore under a scholarship.

The total fees for the 16-month course amounted to about SG$25,000. Ngoc, who arrived in Singapore on November 4, was supposed to pay the first installment of SG$14,000 by December 21. When reminded by the university to pay, she repeatedly gave the excuse that her boyfriend would be arranging to pay for the first installment.

Ngoc’s roommate, Vu Ho Hong Thao, 26, last saw Ngoc at Queensway Student Hostel on December 12, three days before her body was found. Thao, who returned to Vietnam that day, told police that on December 11, she heard Ngoc shouting over the phone at her boyfriend asking why he had not sent the money for her fees.

Ngoc told her that her boyfriend had broken his promise to buy a plane ticket for her to go back to Vietnam. Ann admitted that he had delayed paying Ngoc’s school fees as he was facing some financial difficulties in Vietnam.
