The stormy season has just begun, but the sea has encroached into the mainland more than 300 meters, threatening the lives of hundreds of families in Duc Loi commune, in Quang Ngai province. At the same time, a dozen of houses and a pagoda on the bank of Hau River collapsed on the last several days because of landslide. Dozens of other houses are in danger. I’ve been living here for 80 years, but I’ve never seen serious coastal erosion like this. My village temple has been ruined by the tides,” lamented Mr. Nguyen To, 80.

Many coconut and pine trees have been submerged by waves.

“Waves have swept away half of my house. Our lives are on the peak of waves. I can’t sleep at night, fearing that our house can’t withstand within this year’s stormy season,” worried Ngo Dung in An Chuan village.

In the last two years, over 200 families have moved from the coast due to the sea’s rise.

“Coastal erosion has become more serious because of sand exploitation,” claimed Duc Loi commune Chair Le Thanh Phach.

He predicted that the commune would have to move over 100 households, totaling nearly 400 people, along the coastline.
