While the central Vietnam is struggling with the historic flood, biggest in the last 50 years, a very strong typhoon named Megi is heading to the East Sea.

The storm was reaching maximum winds of 195kph near the centre and gusts of up to 230kph, making it a mega-typhoon, forecasters said. The storm eye was around 410km to the East of the Philippines’ Ludon island on October 17 afternoon. According to the Vietnam National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecast, today - October 18, the storm will threat Vietnam’s sea. The storm is forecast at only 550km to the east of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa Archipelago (Paracel Islands) at noon October 19. From its eye, the dangerous area with strong wind will have a radius of 200km. This is the strongest typhoon so far this year in the Philippines and the East Sea. According to Japanese and American forecasters, after entering the East Sea, the typhoon will hit China and Hong Kong so its direct impacts on Vietnam will be gentle. However, Hong Kong forecasters said that the super storm will keep moving to the west, thus, it may directly hit the central Vietnam. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, chief of the National Steering Committee for Flood and Storms has asked central provinces and related agencies to inform all boats about the typhoon.
