VietNamNet Bridge - Police in Quang Nam province have rescued 32 enslaved workers from a farm in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong. They also brought the body of a worker, who died from malaria, back home.

The 33 workers were among 45 hired by Do Ngoc Lan, 44, to plant acacia hybrids at a farm in Dak Nong. Lan offered them VND1.8-2.1 million ($92-107) a month, but after they arrived at the farm, they had to work three months without payment.

These workers worked and lived in terrible conditions. One, Ho Van Chuong, had malaria, but was not treated and died. Some escaped and reported the situation to the authorities. The remaining workers were then rescued by police.

Do Ngoc Lan was hired by Dak Lak Paper Material Factory to recruit workers for a project to plant trees for paper production. He was paid 100,000 ($5.1) for each hired worker.
