Police in the Northern province of Ninh Binh are investigating three people on suspicion of blackmailing local traffic police.

According to authorities, Le Xuan Hoang, Nguyen Trong Hai, and Hoang Van Cuong, all residents of the Northern province of Thanh Hoa, were arrested on November 17 for “tempting” police into accepting bribes and filming the exchanges.

The trio stands accused of bribing Ninh Binh traffic cops at checkpoints.

According to investigators, the three men were transporting an unnamed mineral ore and offered the bribes so they could continue with their cargo.

The trio used mini-recorders to film the exchanges. Police claim the three men called the individual officers following the exchange, and attempted to blackmail them.

In the last arrest, police confiscated many small cameras and tapes containing footage of police officers accepting bribes.

Hoang and Cuong had previously complained to Thanh Nien reporters about Ninh Binh traffic police attempting to solicit bribes from them.

During their last meeting with reporters, the pair said they planned to record the exchanges and report them to related agencies.

Asked if police deal with officers who received bribes in video clips, Pham Hong Hai, Vice Chairman of Vietnam Bar Federation, said police need to investigate and strictly punish violating officers as well.
