A wild elephant reportedly killed a 14-year-old boy in the southern province of Dong Nai on Sunday.

Initial information is that Nguyen Tran Vu, together with Trinh Hoang Dong, 20, and Nguyen Van Thom, 39, were on two motorbikes, heading to fish at a creek on a plantation belonging to the La Nga Forestry Company when the elephant attacked them.

Thom managed to run away, leaving his motorbike behind while the bike of Vu and Dong was toppled by the pachyderm.

Dong also managed to flee, but Vu was weighed down by the motorbike and was gored by the elephant’s tusk. He died on the way to the local hospital.

The Dong Nai Forest Rangers Bureau said the plantation was a restricted area and that the elephant was considered harmless.
